The Tidewater Art Alliance traces their early origins to 1901 and the alumnae of the Leache-Wood Female Seminary who organized the Irene Leache Memorial to support artistic projects in the Tidewater area. Though the organization has changed its name several times, the need and their goal has remained. Today the Tidewater Art Alliance continues to support, promote, and develop the visual arts in the Tidewater area.

The Annual Portfolio is one of their featured exhibits and offers artists an opportunity to exhibit a cohesive body of works that represent a developed theme, style or vision. The result is a multi-media exhibit consisting of six works by each of the member artists. Gina Cavallo-Collins, an independent curator living in Richmond, Virginia made selections for the 2008 Portfolio.
